A Detailed Experimental Investigation on IC Engine Using Alternate Fuels for Material Compatibility of Piping and Fitting System

The entire world is concerned about the effects of environmental contamination these days, and car emissions as a result of the use of petroleum products are seen as a significant contribution to it. Because of its strong eco-friendly features, biodiesel has shown to be the greatest substitute for diesel. Despite the fact that biodiesel is a superior fuel than fossil fuel, the automobile industry is not ready to accept it due to a lack of study into material compatibility with biodiesel. This causes a delay in the adoption of fully biodiesel engines in autos. Biodiesel is made up of unsaturated fat esters, whereas diesel is made up of hydrocarbons. This study focuses on the experimental analysis of the influence of biodiesel on elastomeric materials used in automobiles, as well as the recommendation of acceptable materials in that field that are more biodiesel compatible. The approach entails immersing elastomeric materials such as NBR, CR, EPDM, Silicone, and Natural Rubber in biodiesel for 250 hours and analysing mechanical properties. The trials reveal that NBR > CR > EPDM > Silicone > Natural rubber is the best elastomer for biodiesel.
