A Rare New Variant with Mixed Pathology and Unilateral Facial Nerve Palsy: Guillain Barre Syndrome
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disease characterised by sudden ascending paralysis involving the bilateral cranial nerves that progresses fast. The most commonly afflicted nerve is the facial nerve, which is usually bilateral but can occasionally be unilateral. We have a very unusual occurrence of unilateral facial nerve palsy in GBS in this case. In such circumstances, electrical testing, such as a blink study, are critical. Our patient had demyelinating polyneuropathy in both upper and lower limb motor nerves, as well as motor axonopathy in both facial nerves (left > right), a rare occurrence in GBS patients. This could be a new GBS variant that hasn’t been seen before.
