Star Anise (Illicium griffithii Hook. f. and Thoms.): A Tree Spice from High Altitude Region of Arunachal Pradesh

The high altitude region of Arunachal Pradesh is home to star anise, a tree species that is commonly recognised as a prized spice. Since ancient times, this spice has played an important role in the social and traditional lives of the region’s indigenous tribes. Star anise is used in a variety of ways, including to enhance the flavour of local foods, to flavour tea, and to treat a variety of diseases. As a result of the demand in pharmaceutical sectors, the spice contributes to the residents’ livelihood security. Furthermore, this spice is a valuable crop for nutritional security because it contains a high number of nutritional contents. However, they are often underutilised, and many are unaware of the nutritional value even when they are used unwittingly. Simultaneously, a lack of awareness combined with habitat destruction may result in genetic erosion and endanger the species resource, which must be maintained and additional research for its nutritional and phytopharmacological qualities is required. Despite its commercial importance, study and understanding on this species are limited, and its potential for human consumption has yet to be completely realised.
