A Cross-sectional Study of Dermatoglyphics Patterns in Female Schizophrenics

The goal of this study was to compare the fingerprint and palm print patterns of female schizophrenia patients to those of healthy people.

The study was conducted in a cross-sectional manner.

Material and Methods: Fifty females with schizophrenia, ranging in age from 16 to 60, and an equal number of age-matched normal controls were chosen. The conventional ink procedure was used to capture the fingerprints and palm prints.

The arches in schizophrenic females are significantly shorter than in controls (p0.05). There is a higher percentage of frequency of presence of patterns in Th/I1 and hypothenar areas of the right hand in schizophrenic females as compared to controls; the difference in frequency of Th/I1 area is statistically significant (p0.05); and a low percentage of frequency of presence of patterns in I2, I3, and I4 areas of the left hand in schizophrenic females as compared to controls; of which, I4 area shows highl When compared to controls, schizophrenic females have a significantly higher prevalence of ridge dissociation in both hands (p0.001). The mean’atd’ angle in both palms of schizophrenic females is higher than in controls (left hand – (p0.05)). The mean a-b ridge count in the left hand and the mean b-c ridge count in the right hand are lower (p0.05) in schizophrenic females than in controls.

Conclusion: Genetic variables can recognise dermatoglyphic patterns. Dermatoglyphic patterns can discriminate between patients and controls when analysed in conjunction with clinical symptoms of schizophrenia.
