Fabrication of Polyvinyl Alcohol/Bentonite Nanocomposites Using Sol-Gel Method

Posted on March 6, 2021 by Editor JournalGazett

The aim of this research was to determine the mechanical, morphological, and thermal properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/bentonite nanocomposites. The sol-gel method is used to create nanocomposites. Natural bentonite (size 35.26 nm) from North Sumatra, Indonesia, was applied to a poly(vinyl alcohol) solution in different amounts, namely 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 wt percent. Tensile testing, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry were used to characterise the nanocomposites that were developed. The overall weight of added bentonite that enhanced mechanical properties and provided a more homogeneous surface was 6 wt%, while variations of 2, 4, and 8 wt% of bentonite resulted in a decreased elasticity modulus. Thermal properties, on the other hand, are preferable to strengthen in the 0 wt% bentonite.
