Photocatalytic Antibacterial Activity of TiO2, TiO2+CuO, and WO3 +CuO -Evaluation of Codoping Effect

Posted on March 4, 2021 by Editor JournalGazett

Under UV irradiation to irritate active oxygen from the agents, the antibacterial efficacy of the photocatalysts TiO2, TiO2+CuO, and WO3+CuO was tested against E. coli, K. pneumoniae, MRSA, and P. aeruginosa. Drawing a bacterial growth curve, colony counting on a cultivated Petri dish, calculating generation time in liquid medium, and evaluating the bacteria’s survival rate using Phase One Plus Realtime PCR were among the analytical criteria. The most effective growth inhibitor was tungsten oxide co-doped with copper (WO3+CuO), followed by TiO2+CuO and TiO2 alone. WO3+CuO had the highest bacterial killing potency (survival rate) of the agents studied, whereas co-doped TiO2+CuO and TiO2 alone had lower activity than WO3+CuO. At 3 hours incubation, photocatalyst-exposed bacteria showed unusual growth curve behaviour, such as re-growth after growth inhibition. K. pneumoniae appeared to be immune to the effect of photocatalysts on growth, indicating the emergence of radical oxygen resistant bacteria. To prevent the emergence of active oxygen resistant bacteria, a more thorough review should be conducted to explain this undesirable phenomenon.
